The film “Mariposas Negras” by Canarian director David Baute about the drama of climate refugees has been the winner of the Goya Award for Best Animated Film during the gala held at the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones de Granada and in which its producers have claimed the need to avoid catastrophes resulting from the climate crisis.

The “cabezón”, as this award is known, was collected by its producers, César Zelada, David Baute, Edmon Roch and Marc Sabé.

Baute wanted to share the Goya with the rest of the animated films, he added that the award will go to Garachico (Tenerife) and that from the periphery it is possible to make films. He also asked governments and international organizations to be sensitive to the fact that the figure of climate exiles is still not recognized.

Main cause of planetary migration

Roch acknowledged that 9 years ago he did not know that the figure of climate refugees did NOT exist, and that the main cause of planetary migration is global warming. Now we are worse off than before, because of many lukewarm and denialist people. We have to fight for it and dedicated the Goya to those affected by the Dana of Valencia.

“Beyond how important it is to repair the damage of major climate catastrophes, the important thing is to avoid them and migrants are criminalized when they are victims. We have to be at their side, the victims are welcomed and protected, not blamed. It is for you too”, concluded Roch.

Mariposas Negras is a coproduction of Ikiru Film (Catalonia), Tinglado Film (Canary Islands) and Tunche Film (Panama), which brings together in 2D animation the drama of climate refugees through the story of three women in different parts of the planet who suffer the effects of global warming and are forced to leave their homes to survive. Last December the film won the award for Best Animated Feature Film at the Forque Awards and also triumphed at the Gaudi Awards, where it won the award for Best Animated Film.
