Tenerife will once again become the epicenter of Ibero-American animation with the celebration of the eighth edition of the Quirino Awards, whose list of finalists was recently announced in Buenos Aires. A total of 26 productions from ten countries will compete for the prestigious award in the various categories of these awards, which since their creation in 2018 have served as a platform for the international projection of the region’s talent.
This year, Spain leads the nominations with twelve nominations, followed by Brazil with eight and Portugal with five. Among the outstanding productions are the three finalist feature films, all of them of Spanish nationality: Buffalo Kids, a Wild West adventure directed by Pedro Solís and Juan Jesús García “Galo”; Dispararon al pianista (They Shot the Piano Player), an animated thriller by Javier Mariscal and Fernando Trueba about the disappearance of Brazilian pianist Tenorio Jr; and Mariposas negras, an animated documentary by David Baute about the forced emigration of women due to the climate crisis.
The jury for this edition will be made up of leading figures in the animation industry, including Ben Kalina (producer at Titmouse), Carolina López Caballero (Spanish researcher and programmer), Helena Nylander (acquisitions executive at SVT), Daniel Bruson (Brazilian animator and director) and Leyla Formoso (director of Prime Entertainment Group). They will be in charge of evaluating the nominations and selecting the winners, whose names will be unveiled on May 10 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
A space for reflection and connection for the industry
In addition to the awards gala, the Quirino Awards 2025 will host various initiatives to strengthen the Ibero-American animation ecosystem. Of particular note is the launch of the Laboratorio de Futuros del Espacio Iberoamericano de Animación, a project in collaboration with the Ortega Marañón Foundation that seeks to explore new strategies for the development of the sector. A new edition of the Co-Production and Business Forum will also be held, which will include the renewed round table on “Women in Ibero-American animation”.
The legacy of Quirino Cristiani and the impact of these awards
Named in honor of Quirino Cristiani, animation pioneer and creator of the first animated feature film in history (El Apóstol, 1917), these awards have evolved to become an indispensable reference in the industry. With more than 1,900 works nominated since its first edition, its impact is undeniable, consolidating Ibero-America as a pole of innovation and creativity in the global animation scene.
The eighth edition of the Quirino Awards has the support of the Cabildo de Tenerife through Turismo de Tenerife and the Tenerife Film Commission, as well as various institutions and entities of the sector.
