MARIPOSAS NEGRAS’ animated feature film by David Baute Selected in competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival
BLACK BUTTERFLIES’, an animated feature film by DAVID BAUTE, will compete in the Official Contrechamp Section of the prestigious ANNECY International Animation Film Festival.
It is an ambitious film, inspired by real women, which proposes a journey from Africa, the Caribbean and Asia to an uncertain future for humanity. All this through an exquisite animation.
After passing through the prestigious markets of MIFA, Impact Day, MIA-Market Animation, Ventana Sur and Animac, and after a process of more than eight years, ‘BLACK BUTTERFLIES’ has been selected by the prestigious International Animation Film Festival of Annecy, considered the most important in the world of animation, in its Official Competition Section Contrechamp. The Festival will take place between June 9th and 15th, and ‘BLACK BUTTERFLIES’ has been chosen among more than 3,400 films received this year from 108 different countries.
This ambitious film, inspired by real women, proposes a journey from Africa, the Caribbean and Asia towards an uncertain future for all humanity.
Filmmaker David Baute recognizes that: “Since the beginning of my career I have always linked my artistic production to social issues such as migration, the environment or the lives of underrepresented women. ‘MARIPOSAS NEGRAS‘ combines these three motivations with the intention of shaking the viewer’s conscience, through empathy and reflection”. And it goes on to denounce that “the ‘environmental migrants’ or ‘climate refugees’ increase year by year, without being internationally recognized”.
Climate change impacts the lives of Tanit, Valeria and Shaila, three women from very different parts of the planet but with something in common: all three lose everything due to the effect of global warming and are forced to migrate.
“Tanit, Shaila and Valeria are women who struggle to maintain their identity, to not disappear in the migratory feat due to climate change that has taken away their roots and references,” Baute explains. “Their main battle is not to lose their voice, to be able to tell their testimonies. They are blurred women who struggle not to merge with the gray environment that rejects them. But ‘BLACK BUTTERFLIES’ is not only their stories, but the chronicle of a dark chapter of our planet, plagued by an uncomfortable and urgent truth.”
Edmon Roch, producer of ‘BLACK BUTTERFLIES’, confesses, “Ever since David Baute contacted me in February 2016, I knew this was a necessary film. The World Bank projects that climate change will cause 216 million people to have left their homes by 2050 in Latin America, Africa and South Asia. Most of them come from regions that have contributed little to global warming; paradoxically, those who suffer the worst consequences of climate change are the least responsible for its causes. And there is still no such thing as a climate refugee. We narrate the experiences of those who suffer its consequences, their struggle not to disappear even though their places of origin no longer exist, and we do it with exquisite animation, like a universal tale to reach young and old of all ages”.
Among the creative team of ‘MARIPOSAS NEGRAS’ stands out Pepe Sánchez as Production Designer and Animation Director, María Pulido as Art and Photography Director, the composer of the original Soundtrack Diego Navarro, the screenwriter Yaiza Berrocal, or the sound design of Oriol Tarragó.
MARIPOSAS NEGRAS‘ is a production of Tinglado Film, Ikiru Films, Anangu Grup and Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals, SA in co-production with Tunche Films (Panama), and with the participation of TVPC, 3CAT and Mogambo, with the financing of ICAA and with the support of ICEC, Government of the Canary Islands and Cabildo Insular de Tenerife.
